What is a ventilated facade?
It's an exterior wall assembly where cladding is separated from the structural wall by an open air cavity, allowing natural airflow to manage heat and moisture instead of sealing the wall face directly against the weather.
What are ventilated walls?
Ventilated walls and ventilated facades describe the same assembly: an insulated structural wall, an air cavity, and an outer cladding layer working together to regulate temperature and moisture through continuous airflow.
What does "facade" mean in simple terms?
A facade is the exterior face of a building — most often the front, though the term applies to any external wall surface that faces the outdoors and forms the building's visible skin.
What are the types of facades?
Common types include face-sealed (barrier) facades, drained/back-ventilated rainscreen facades, double-skin glazed facades, and curtain wall systems. Ventilated facades are a rainscreen subtype defined by their open, air-moving cavity.
What materials are used in ventilated facade cladding?
Natural stone, porcelain and ceramic panels, metal composite panels, timber, and flexible stone panels are all used as outer cladding layers, chosen based on weight, substrate compatibility, and the fixing method the project specifies.
Can tile or stone cladding be used in a ventilated facade?
Potentially. Rigid stone and porcelain are commonly mechanically anchored, while selected flexible MCM panels may be bonded to an approved carrier board. The facade designer must confirm the full carrier-board, adhesive, restraint, subframe and wind-load build-up.
What fixings or anchors attach ventilated facade cladding?
Mechanically fixed systems use engineered brackets, rails and anchors. A flexible MCM facing may be bonded to an approved carrier board, but adhesive does not replace the engineered restraint, carrier-board fixing or subframe required by the complete facade system.
How is a ventilated facade installed?
A typical sequence coordinates the wall, WRB, insulation, subframe, cavity, carrier board, fire-stopping and outer cladding. The project designer sets the order and fixing details; Angtai's instructions cover the flexible panel's preparation and bonding step only.
