Flexible Stone in Rainscreen Systems

Angtai supplies only the flexible MCM facing panel, not the complete rainscreen assembly. It can serve as the visible outer finish once the carrier board, fixing method, wind-load design, and local requirements are confirmed.

Where the Flexible Stone Facing Sits

A rainscreen system pairs an outer cladding skin that sheds most rainwater with a water- and air-resistive barrier on the structural wall that stops whatever gets through. An air gap between the two drains any water that penetrates the cladding and ventilates the cavity dry.

That's the difference from a barrier wall (one sealed surface, no drainage plane) and a mass wall (thick material that absorbs and buffers moisture instead of shedding it). A rainscreen is designed to let water reach the back of the cladding without letting it reach the structure — that's expected performance, not a defect.

How Ventilated Rainscreen Systems Work

Drainage

Water crossing a panel joint runs down the back of the cladding to weep openings at the base of the wall.

Pressure Equalization

Venting the gap at top and bottom reduces the pressure difference across the cladding that pulls wind-driven rain inward through joints.

Convective Drying

Air moving through the cavity clears residual moisture before it reaches the sheathing or insulation behind it.

For flexible stone, the gap typically runs 1/4" for panels direct-adhered to furring, up to 3/4" for panels mechanically fixed to a grid subframe with more airflow behind them. Exact clearance depends on wind load and local code — no single gap dimension applies to every jurisdiction or substrate.

Anatomy of a Rainscreen System (Rainscreen Detail)

A rainscreen builds up in five layers, from the structure outward:

Plate metal substrates need corrosion-resistant fasteners and a rust-preventative primer before installation. Bare steel can rust under moisture exposure.

Concrete and OSB use different fastener spacing and flashing sequences. These details are covered in the rainscreen system guide.

Flexible Stone Panels in a Rainscreen Cavity

Flexible stone panels use a thin, bendable base with water-based, inorganic, firing-free inkjet printing. Unlike quarried stone veneer, this construction offers different options for rainscreen applications. Full-size exterior stone panels reach 1200×3000 mm across the Travertine, Slate, and Textured series in regular production.

Lower Dead Load on the Subframe

Thickness and weight vary by series and are confirmed in the project quote. The thin base can reduce load compared with slab-based cladding. Compare other options in lightweight cladding materials.

Bends Around Curved and Irregular Walls

The panel flexes around curves without relief joints, helping keep the drainage plane continuous.

Two Fixing Options

Panels can be adhered to furring or mechanically fixed to a grid subframe, leaving a stand-off gap behind the cladding.

Temperature and Wear Resistance

Selected models have manufacturer-reported testing from -40°C to 150°C, along with Grade 4 wear resistance. The surface is rain-washable and easy to clean.

Subframe & Load Planning

Bracket, clip, rail, and restraint design belongs to the project-specific subframe package. The ventilated facade guide lists the panel information to coordinate. Confirm panel thickness and weight before finalizing load calculations.

Impact Resistance

No published impact-test rating is available. For high-traffic, ground-level, or vandal-exposed areas, request impact data or plan a separate protective detail.

Warranty Terms

Every order includes an after-sales warranty, but the duration varies. Confirm the exact term in writing before finalizing the quote.

Joint Continuity

Flexible panels avoid relief cuts on curves, but planned seams still need consistent spacing and sealing across large spans.

Angtai's manufacturing history traces to 1997. Its 36,000 m² factory now operates four soft porcelain lines, with R&D support from South China University of Technology. The collection has been shown at Marmomac 2025 in Verona and China Homelife Indonesia Expo.

Quotes return within 24 hours, samples ship within 5 days, and production typically takes 25–30 days depending on order size. OEM/ODM support covers custom colors, textures, and sizes.

Factory-direct sourcing can help reduce distributor markups. Compare rainscreen cladding manufacturers and review rainscreen system costs, since subframe type and gap depth affect installed cost. Contact us for a quote or free sample before finalizing the subframe design.

FAQ

What is a rainscreen system?
It's an exterior wall assembly with an outer cladding layer, a ventilated air gap, and an inner water/air barrier. The gap lets any water that passes the cladding drain and dry out instead of soaking into the structural wall.
Is Tyvek a rainscreen?
No. Tyvek is a water-resistive barrier (housewrap) installed against the sheathing — it's the inner layer of a rainscreen assembly, not the air gap or cladding that make the system function as one. A wall still needs a drained air gap between the housewrap and the cladding to actually be a rainscreen.
How much does a rainscreen system cost?
Cost depends on cladding material, subframe hardware, and gap depth: furring-strip assemblies run cheaper in materials but cost more in labor, while grid subframes raise material cost but often install faster. Exact pricing factors are broken out in rainscreen system cost factors.
What is the best rain screen system for siding?
It depends on siding weight and wall condition. Furring strips work well for lightweight siding on flat walls; grid subframes suit heavier or curved claddings that need precise, consistent standoff distances. For flexible stone specifically, both direct-adhered furring and grid subframes work — the choice comes down to substrate condition and required gap depth.
What are the rainscreen system installation steps?
Prepare the substrate (level, clean, dry, firm), install the water-resistive barrier, fix the subframe or furring to set the gap, then adhere or mechanically fasten the cladding. Full sequencing, including flashing and seam treatment by substrate, is in the rainscreen system guide.
What's the difference between a residential and commercial rainscreen system?
Residential assemblies typically use furring strips or drainage mats with lighter claddings like wood or fiber cement. Commercial assemblies more often use engineered grid subframes to carry heavier cladding loads and taller wall heights, with tighter pressure-equalization detailing at larger spans.
What air gap size does a rainscreen system need?
There is no universal Angtai gap dimension. The facade system provider or project engineer sets cavity depth from tested details, exposure, drainage, ventilation, wind load, fire-stopping and local requirements.
Can flexible stone panels be used in a rainscreen assembly?
Potentially, as the outer facing over an approved carrier board. The facade designer must confirm the selected panel, adhesive, carrier board, subframe, restraint, wind load, cavity and fire-performance scope as one project-specific assembly.
